CARNETS DESCARTES

Tips for the future Erasmus student

My first advice ? If you have the opportunity to go and study in Newcastle, do not hesitate and go for it. You will discover a city full of qualities, as well as a different education at Northumbria University. In addition, the fact of living with roommates from all over England and even the world is a wonderful chance, so don't be scared by this, it's probably one of the best aspects of the Erasmus experience !

Before you leave, review a little bit of English! If discussions of everyday life never gave me problems, I had a little trouble at first with the management of administrative forms, especially with employees on the phone. Speaking english with someone in front of you is not very complicated, but it is when you talk on the phone with someone using technical terms and which you don't understand the accent, don't hesitate to practice before leaving !

When you will be in England, you will have plenty of free time. You can then establish a schedule very quickly to fill your weeks and not find yourself lost without knowing what to do. So from the first week, you can play sports, go out and meet people, visit the city and its surroundings... There are many things to do in Newcastle !

For those who stay a year I recommend them to open a bank account at Lloyd's. They offer free student bank accounts with debit card included. This will help you if you want to enroll  some institutions like sports central that request to have a UK bank account.

Otherwise, don't ask yourself too many questions and don't be anxious to leave. You will see that at the end of the year, the time has passed quickly...

Many thanks to the IUT Paris Descartes and his teaching staff who helped me out for this unforgettable experience, and thanks to Northumbria University and its teachers and students who welcomed me during this wonderful year.
