A tale about my incredible journey in Lithuania

Chapter One: Bravery

Once upon a time in Paris, a young girl named Ambre decided that it was time to leave her fears behind and starts to take her future in her own hands. That’s why she decided to leave France and fly to Lithuania for a year of Erasmus exchange.

When she arrived in her dormitory room in Sauletekio 39, she realized that everything was real now. She was alone in that soviet aspect room, perplex, confused, when her roommate arrived. This was the last time that Ambre would ever be alone in Lithuania.

The few first days were very emotional. It takes time to adapt to a new country, new cultures, life in community, new language,… Helped by her mentor Gabrielė Vaitkutė and her new friends our young protagonist found pretty easily her marks in the Capital.

Vilnius Gedimino Street

Vilnius, founded in 1976 by Grand Duke Gediminas is the capital of Lithuania. It’s the second largest city of the Baltic States. The city has had a profound influence on the cultural and architectural development of much of Eastern Europe. Despite invasions and partial destruction, it has preserved an impressive complex of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and classical buildings as well as its medieval layout and natural setting. Vilnius is a very pleasant city to live in, but it can be hard to be accepted as a foreigner sometimes…

The biggest ordeal that Ambre had to overcome is the language difference. Lithuanian is a complex language, very different from French or English! Also, Lithuanian’s behavior can be harsh. The majority of the older population can’t speak English and is not foreigner friendly. But Ambre remained positive and her taste for adventure remained strong!
