CARNETS DESCARTES

Lapland is amazing !

We went to a huge farm held by a very typical man dressed with a massive fur cap and a big fur deerstalker (I added a picture of him below).

His farm offers sled dog tours but many other animals are also standing here (hens, reindeers, pigs, horses…). After visiting this pretty farm, we met the huskies for the ride. These dogs are amazing. They are wonderful, vigorous, able to withstand extreme temperatures (until minus 30 degrees) and run during long rides.

At the beginning, I thought that we weren’t allowed to ride the sled. But when I came in front of the sled the farmer told me that I will ride and be ridden during the ballade. My roommate and I were quite surprised but excited about this new experience. We decided that he begins to ride the sled and I will take it over for the second part of the ballade. This promenade was an amazing moment. I was fascinated by the beauty of the landscapes (snow draped pins, frozen lakes ….). The silence was impressive and magical, probably one of the best rides of my life. Fortunately, the weather was clear and sunny, thereby permitting to perfectly enjoy the ride. In the second part, it was my turn to ride the sled. I was surprise by the easiness and the speed of this unusual vehicle. The dogs knew the right way and I just had to stop them by pushing on a pedal when it was necessary. After this magical time, we thanked the dogs for the ride, a beautiful moment.

Then, we visited a natural park near the farm. Again, the landscapes were amazing and impressive. We grilled sausages on the open fire, a nice and typical experience. After this feast, we tried to cut wood with an axe, difficult but very funny.

Finally, as finish tradition, we went to sauna. The custom dictates that the individual has to go to the sauna (about 80 degrees) and then run in the snow and jump into the lake. That’s what we did… Refreshing!

This trip was marvelous, probably one of my best memory for this Erasmus year in Estonia. I strongly recommend people to visit these protected and wonderful areas.
