CARNETS DESCARTES

Visit of Riga

In november, I visited Riga, the capital of Lativia. Riga is the biggest capital of the Baltic’s countries (800 000 inhabitants) and located 300 kilometers away from Tallinn. The city center is quite similar to Tallinn: small and cozy. The cobblestone streets are narrow and atypical. However, compared with Tallin, the city has much more districts around its center.

First, we visited a beautiful market located in the central square and we bought several souvenirs.

For the lunch, we ate in a Russian restaurant. I chose a typical Russian soup, a bortsch. This plate seems to be light but the potatoes and the carrots make it heavier and difficult to handle. He booked an apartment near the city center and I was stupefied by the price of the taxi: just 3€ for 20 minutes! We were nearly embarrassed to pay this ridiculous amount.

There is a huge park in the city called Bastejkalna parks crossed by a little river. This space is very nice and many benches are settled for the pedestrians. The tourist can make a small tour by boat in the river.  It was amusing to observe dozens students playing with their mobile phone (during the trendy period of the Nintendo app “PokemonGo”).

We also visited the Riga Central Market. This place is very famous in Riga because of the wide range of products proposed. It was truly impressive. The visitor can find whatever he wants. There are food stands (butcheries, fish shop, spices sellers) but also clothes shoes, amber shops… It was so large that we got lost for 30 minutes!

On the whole, I would say that this city seems to be a perfect place for studying. The cost of living is not high for students and there are more services available than in Tallinn (local businesses). The city is larger and extended thereby offering much more activities for students living there.
