CARNETS DESCARTES

The Tallinn’s Christmas market (Tallinna Jouluturg)

Since 2001, Tallinn has settled its Christmas market in the central square of the city center. Legend holds that in 1441, in the same place, a merchant danced with other girls around a tree and then burned it. According to legend, since this date it is common to illuminate trees…  This year, the Christmas market began on November 18th  until January 7th.

The market is composed of fifty stands selling artisanal products made all over Estonia. The visitors can find many Christmas decorations (wooden figurines, handmade Christmas balls…). Several Russian sellers are present and offer typical fur products (chapka, fur coats, fur gloves…). My friends and I, warmed up with a glass of hot wine. The vendors propose to add dried fruits (raisin, hazelnut…) inside, delicious!

I had already visited certain Christmas market before (Strasbourg or Berlin for instance) but I had never seen such a cute market. With the snow on the floor, it was a real mountain atmosphere. A huge Christmas tree was placed, in the middle of the place ranging 10 meters. It was decorated with Christmas tinsels and balls.

On the whole, Tallinn is a magic place to spend the winterer holidays. It is a warm environment and ferric!

On these pictures you can see the difference between Christmas period and the rest of the year.
