The intégration in Erasmus

Many French students are afraid about leaving their country for a long period of time. The main fear concerns a supposed difficult integration into an unknown environment.  I admit that I was quite upset at the beginning of the trip about this question. Indeed, if the integration is not well done, the year may be quite a long time…  Moreover, contrary to other students from Paris Descartes University, I was the only one to go at the Tallinn University.

However, when I arrived I was surprised to observe the wide range of activities organized by the student body in order to facilitate the incoming student’s integration (karaoke parties, pub crawls, city tours…). The goal was to create, enhance and develop the student relationships.

On the whole, I noticed that Erasmus students are very open-minded. They are eager for new experiences and meetings.  Anyway, we students are coming in a new country they often do not know anyone. This facilitates the speed to create links between students.

When it comes to the courses, I may say that teachers are very understanding with Erasmus students. They help us to integrate in the group. Most of the time, they try to find solution about the grading when certain Erasmus students have to come back in their home country. Generally, the lecturers know the nationalities of their students. Thus, they often ask question about the news in our country. For example, according to them, the elections in France were considered as a priority issue.

To conclude, it would be a great mistake to not to leave in Erasmus because of these fears. In general, the host universities have their own Student Union office welcoming incoming students. In addition, the professors are aware of the particularity of our statute. They focus on our good insertion and do their best to provide us a unique experience.
