Sweden and the Fika Tradition

Sweden and the Fika Tradition

Hej,

Today, I am going to talk about my favorite Swedish tradition : Fika ! At the same time noun and verb, fika is the verlan of the word kaffe and is considered as a real social institution in Sweden. Basically, it refers to the Swedish coffee break. But in people's mind it is much more than that.

Fika is a little daily pleasure, a moment of sharing and relaxation anywhere (at home, at work, in a coffee shop, etc.) and with anyone (family, friends, colleagues, teachers, etc). The only important point is to be with someone, and not alone.

When people fika, they usually drink a hot drink and eat something. Coffee is the favorite drink of fika by definition, but people can also drink tea or hot chocolate for example. As for pastries, there are kanellbullar (a cinnamon brioche) but also Sarah Bernhardt cookies, semla, mazarin, or chokladbollars.

Now, you are ready for fika !

In the next article, I will talk about the vision of nature of the Swedes.

Tack och vi his snart !
